Acid Reflux Cookbook

Never, ever, EVER lie down after you eat! Even if you have only had a few bites, you may find that food comes back to haunt you in short order if you lie down. Eat all meals at least two hours before lying down for a nap or overnight to ensure that acid doesn't sneak back up your esophagus.

Watch out for foods that trigger your acid reflux. For most people, these include fried and fatty foods, caffeinated and/or carbonated beverages, citrus juices, spicy foods, etc. There may be other foods and drinks that cause your acid reflux, so just be mindful of what you are eating. If you notice that a particular food or drink is worsening your acid reflux, stop consuming it.

Try a spoonful of honey. While there is no hard evidence that honey treats acid reflux, it is very useful to soothe and relieve the painful burning associated with it. Honey will coat your esophagus in a protective and soothing layer, and help neutralize some of the acid. If you are looking for some relief until you can identify and treat the cause of your heartburn, a little honey can be just what you need to get back to sleep.

Alter your activity after meals. If you suffer from frequent bouts of acid reflux, watch your activity after meals. Avoid clothing that is tight around the middle, and try not to bend over or do any heavy lifting. All of these things can help keep your stomach acid where it belongs.

You don't want to consume a lot of alcohol if you are a sufferer of acid reflux. Alcohol increases stomach acid production. If you still decide to drink, be sure to limit your intake and search for a drink that doesn't give you acid reflux.

Do not go to bed until three hours after your last meal. Thus, if you plan to retire at 10:00, have your dinner by 7:00. When lying down on a full stomach, more pressure is applied to the LES muscle. This is what causes an acid reflux attack.

When you have acid reflux disease it can be difficult to eat foods that are acidic such as tomato sauce and salsa. If you have been steering clear of these foods out of fear of discomfort, you no longer have to avoid them altogether. Taking an antacid prior to eating these types of foods can help you avoid experiencing acid reflux.

Eating the correct foods can go a long way in reducing and preventing acid reflux. Fresh vegetables and fruits, lean red meats and poultry without the skin are ideal for promoting healthy digestion. When you digestive track is functioning properly, the risk of acid reflux episodes after meals is greatly reduced.

Limit the amount of beverages you drink with your meals. Excessive beverages add to the volume of the contents of your stomach. A full stomach puts too much pressure on your esophagus. Do not put too much stress on this muscle if you want to prevent acid reflux.
